Queensland Leaders Stand Firm on 2032 Olympic Rowing Plans in Rockhampton

The upcoming 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane will feature rowing events on the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, with local officials firmly dismissing criticism regarding the venue's suitability. During a recent press conference, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli emphasized that the games will proceed as planned, despite concerns over accommodation and potential environmental issues.

Addressing the media at the Rockhampton Rowing Club, Crisafulli made it clear that he believes the criticism stems from elitist attitudes towards regional venues. “No ifs, no buts, no maybes… I say to the naysayers, ‘Sorry, we’re not for turning,’” he declared. Rockhampton, located approximately 630 kilometers north of Brisbane, is known for its beef cattle industry and is gearing up to host the Olympic rowing and canoeing events.

While preparations are ongoing, concerns have been raised about the cost and availability of accommodation for the expected influx of athletes and spectators. Critics have pointed out the potential dangers posed by local crocodile habitats and the challenges posed by tidal currents in the river. In response, Queensland's Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie accused detractors of viewing regional Queensland as inferior, asserting that an athletes' village for 1,200 competitors will be constructed and more lodging options will emerge by 2032.
