Raise a Glass: Mastering the Classic French 75 Cocktail

By Editor • September 4, 2026 • 1 min read

The French 75 is a timeless cocktail that effortlessly blends the bright notes of gin and fresh lemon juice with the effervescence of Champagne. This delightful drink is perfect for a variety of occasions, whether it’s a New Year’s Eve bash, a festive brunch, or a leisurely summer gathering.

Crafting the Perfect French 75

To create this crisp and refreshing beverage, start by shaking together gin, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice. This not only ensures proper dilution but also adds a hint of sweetness to balance the tartness of the lemon. For the best results, chill your Champagne in the fridge for at least four hours prior to mixing.

Gin or Cognac: Choosing Your Spirit

While gin is the preferred spirit in modern versions of the French 75, cognac offers a rich and warming alternative with historical ties to the drink's origins. Both spirits can be used interchangeably in equal measures, allowing you to tailor the cocktail to your taste. Additionally, if you wish to mix things up further, feel free to substitute Champagne with other dry sparkling wines like Cava or Prosecco, ensuring it’s labeled “brut” to maintain the cocktail's balance.

Preparation Made Easy

If you want to prepare ahead of time, you can mix the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup up to six hours before serving. Combine 1½ cups of gin, ¾ cups of fresh lemon juice, and ¾ cups of simple syrup in a pitcher, adding ½ cup of water to account for dilution. Chill this mixture until you're ready to serve. When it’s time to enjoy, pour 3½ oz. of the chilled mixture into a flute and top it with 2 oz. of Champagne, garnished with a spiral twist of lemon for an aromatic finish.
