RDAI and Creative Matters Unveil Zoometry: Rugs Inspired by Earth's Microcosm

In a breathtaking fusion of art and science, RDAI, a Paris-based architectural firm, has unveiled a new collection of rugs that delve into the microscopic world of nature. Launched during the Maison & Objet fair, this innovative project, named Zoometry, showcases six intricately designed rugs that turn the viewer's gaze downward to appreciate their unique beauty.
The collaboration between RDAI, led by Denis Montel and Julia Capp, and Canadian rug maker Creative Matters, represents a significant leap into experimental design. Interior architect Johan Thuillot spearheaded the project, aiming not to depict animals or landscapes but rather to recreate the biological structures of Earth’s smallest creatures. Utilizing advanced 3D modeling software, Thuillot meticulously crafted patterns that mirror the intricate workings of microscopic life.
Textile artists Anna Panosyan and Clémence Hardelay from Creative Matters joined the effort, enhancing the designs with thoughtfully chosen color gradients that evoke movement and depth. After nearly two years of collaboration, the final pieces were dubbed 'couture' by Panosyan, who highlighted the stunning color transitions in the Coral rug and the moiré effect in Butterfly 03, which emulates the curvature of butterfly wings.
Displayed at Galerie Mouvements Modernes, the rugs are complemented by laser-engraved glass blocks that reveal their complex structures from different angles. The centerpiece, Butterfly 02, features hundreds of rectangular cells that resemble the eyespots of butterflies. Despite their beauty and craftsmanship, these rugs, weighing 35kg each, are not intended for heavy foot traffic and require a specialized artisan technique to create.
Creative Matters' artisans, working in teams, painstakingly tied each knot by hand, resulting in a total density of 1.8 million knots per rug. Panosyan expressed that the project offered her a rare sense of creative freedom, allowing the handmade qualities to shine through. “You can feel this is handmade,” she remarked, emphasizing the value of imperfections in the final product. Zoometry will be on display at Mouvements Modernes until September 23, 2026.
