As tensions escalate in Europe, a series of suspicious incidents targeting military and defense facilities has raised alarms, with many pointing fingers at Russia. The latest event occurred at Leipzig airport, where explosive drones were discovered, leading Germany to declare Russian involvement.

Pattern of Suspicious Incidents

Following the discovery of drones at Leipzig's airport on August 4, a string of fires and sabotage attempts have been reported across Europe, intensifying concerns over Russia's activities. On August 10, a major fire at Bulgaria's EMCO defense firm was linked to a fuel delivery mishap, while the Italian factory KNDS Ammo outside Rome experienced an explosion on August 13, with investigations underway for potential external interference.

Estonia's Milrem Robotics factory also caught fire, with Prime Minister Kristen Michal acknowledging the possibility of Russian sabotage. Furthermore, Slovakia thwarted an arson attack against a Ukrainian-owned drone manufacturer, arresting three suspects allegedly acting on Russian orders. In Poland, two fires at defense-related companies prompted Prime Minister Donald Tusk to label the incidents as part of a broader Russian strategy.

Escalation of Tactics

Experts believe these incidents signal a shift in Russia's offensive tactics. Daniela Richterova from King's College noted the unusual intensity of attacks on military sites, implying a response to Ukraine's recent successes in the conflict. Analysts suggest that the Kremlin's goal may be to intimidate European nations into reducing their support for Ukraine.

Keir Giles from Chatham House views the sabotage campaign as an assessment of NATO's vulnerabilities, indicating that Russia is gathering intelligence on how far it can push without triggering a larger military response. With over 165 suspected sabotage cases reported in Germany alone this year, the scale of the operations is becoming increasingly evident.
