SA Health Employee Disciplined for Breaching AFL Star's Privacy

In a concerning breach of privacy, an employee from SA Health has faced reprimand for accessing the private medical records of AFL icon Tony Modra. The incident follows Modra's serious injuries sustained in a truck crash in June.

Investigation Updates

SA Health has confirmed that the investigation into this matter has seen a reduction in the number of individuals under scrutiny. Initially, nine employees were being examined for their potential inappropriate access to patient records, but this number has now been narrowed down to three. Of these, one has been reprimanded, while investigations into the remaining two are still ongoing. Six other employees have been cleared of wrongdoing.

Modra's Accident and Recovery

The former AFL player, known for his time with the Adelaide Crows and the Fremantle Dockers, was involved in a truck accident on June 18 near Victor Harbor. Following the crash, he underwent significant medical treatment, including facial surgery, and shared updates on his recovery with fans via social media.

Past Incidents of Privacy Breaches

This incident is not isolated, as SA Health has faced scrutiny in the past for similar breaches. In 2016, 13 staff members were sanctioned for accessing the medical records of Cy Walsh, while a more recent investigation in 2024 revealed that 18 employees improperly accessed records related to the late Charlie Stevens, son of SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens. SA Health has stated its commitment to regularly conduct audits to enforce proper access to patient information.
