Singapore Chooses 'We Are All Strangers' for Oscars Bid

Anthony Chen's latest film, 'We Are All Strangers,' has been chosen as Singapore's official entry for the international feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. This announcement was made by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), following a selection process by the Singapore Film Commission Advisory Committee (SFCAC).

The film, which debuted in Singapore cinemas in August, explores themes of family dynamics and unforeseen life changes against a contemporary Singapore backdrop. It features a talented cast including Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, alongside Andi Lim and Regene Lim. Notably, 'We Are All Strangers' is the culmination of Chen's Growing Up trilogy, which began with the acclaimed 'Ilo Ilo' in 2013 and continued with 'Wet Season' in 2019.

Chen's previous works have garnered significant international recognition, amassing over 50 awards, including 12 nominations and five wins at the Golden Horse Awards. 'Ilo Ilo' also received the prestigious Caméra d’Or at Cannes. Yvonne Tang, assistant chief executive at IMDA’s Media Industry Group, expressed pride in the selection, highlighting Chen's unique storytelling ability that resonates both locally and globally. Chen himself reflected on the importance of the film in representing Singapore on such a significant platform, marking a decade-long journey of storytelling.
