Sir Keir Starmer to Step Down as MP, Spark By-Election in North London

Former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as MP for Holborn and St Pancras, paving the way for a by-election in his North London constituency. This decision comes just over a month after he stepped down as Labour leader and PM amid declining approval ratings and mounting internal pressure.

Starmer, who led Labour to a significant election victory in July 2024, struggled to maintain popularity, ultimately leading to his departure from the political forefront. His successor, Andy Burnham, has been preparing to address Parliament for the first time as Prime Minister.

In a statement to the Camden New Journal, Starmer expressed his desire to 'pass the baton to a successor' and indicated a shift in focus towards international affairs, including defense and security, as well as ongoing efforts to combat violence against women and girls.

Having entered Parliament in 2015 after a distinguished legal career, Starmer took the helm of the Labour Party following Jeremy Corbyn's 2019 election defeat. His leadership was marked by navigating the party through the pandemic and addressing various challenges, from the cost of living crisis to controversial appointments within his government.
