Southwest Airlines to Launch First-Ever Airport Lounges in Strategic Cities
By Editor • September 4, 2026 • 1 min read
In a significant shift from its traditional low-cost model, Southwest Airlines has announced plans to open its first airport lounges, marking a new chapter for the carrier. The move, confirmed on September 2, reflects the airline's ambition to attract more premium travelers.
Four Key Locations for New Lounges
Construction of the lounges is already underway at four major airports: Austin-Bergstrom International in Texas, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall in Maryland, Nashville International in Tennessee, and Daniel K. Inouye International in Hawaii. The airline anticipates that these lounges will begin welcoming guests by late 2027, with additional lounges planned for future development.
Collaboration with Chase and Competitive Strategy
Southwest is partnering with Chase to create these lounges, which will be accessible via a new Southwest Rapid Rewards-branded credit card set to debut in 2027. The design and amenities will mirror those found in the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network, catering to a more upscale clientele.
As the airline seeks to strengthen its market position—currently holding 75.8% of the US airline market share alongside major competitors such as Delta, American, and United—Southwest's CEO Bob Jordan has emphasized the need to evolve the airline's offerings. The introduction of these lounges aligns with broader changes, including the retirement of its 'Bags Fly Free' policy and the introduction of tiered ticketing options aimed at enhancing customer experience.
