Spain's Ceuta Crisis Sparks Mass Protests Amid Ongoing Tensions

In a powerful display of dissent, thousands of Spaniards took to the streets on Ceuta Day to voice their frustrations over the persistent migrant crisis affecting the small territory of Ceuta. The main demonstration in Madrid attracted approximately 50,000 participants, with many locals in Ceuta expressing their grievances by wrapping themselves in Spanish flags and chanting slogans like "Ceuta is not for sale, Ceuta must be defended".
The protests come one month after a catastrophic surge, where over 70,000 migrants attempted to enter Ceuta from Morocco, resulting in at least 80 fatalities. Though many have returned, around 5,000 remain, according to government estimates. Among them is Otman Ianaya, who, along with his family, fled to Ceuta seeking a better future.
Conditions for the remaining migrants are dire, with reports of some sleeping on beaches, while the Spanish government has faced criticism for its inadequate response. Tensions have escalated, leading to clashes between locals and police, as well as violence directed at migrants. Ceuta's regional leader, Juan Jesus Vivas, described the situation as a "violation of Spain’s territorial integrity". Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has pointed to misinformation and legal misinterpretations as contributing factors to the crisis.
