Strict Shooting Schedule Shapes 'All That She Wants' Performances

In an industry where filmmakers often have the luxury of multiple takes, Scarlett Bermingham and Andrew Rhymer's romantic comedy 'All That She Wants' took a different approach. With a mere 22 days to film, the duo enforced a strict policy of just two takes per scene, pushing their talented cast to deliver top-notch performances without the opportunity for extensive retakes.

During their visit to TheWrap's studio at the Toronto International Film Festival, the filmmakers shared insights into their unique shooting style, contrasting it with the more relaxed, improvisational methods used in longer productions. Rhymer emphasized the importance of performance over perfection, stating, "We really wanted it to be about the performances. It wasn't like a vintage Apatow shoot where we're gonna shoot for 60 days and do 19 takes of everything."

Starring Annie Murphy, known for her role in 'Schitt's Creek,' and Cooper Raiff, who directed 'Cha Cha Real Smooth,' the film explores the unexpected connection between Emma and Luke, stemming from a one-night stand. Murphy resonated with her character's struggle for order amidst chaos, explaining, "I think there are big similarities between me and Emma in terms of really wanting, so badly, to do the right thing in the right order."

Production designer Caitlin Burns also played a pivotal role in crafting the film's emotional landscape, contrasting the inviting yet disorienting atmosphere of Luke's dorm room with the sterile environment of Emma's family home. Bermingham praised Burns for effectively illustrating Emma's internal conflicts through the settings.
