Highlighting Diverse Themes

Among the standout entries is Flurin Giger's "A Year Without Summer," which delves into the plight of a peasant family in 1816 as they grapple with the aftermath of a catastrophic volcanic eruption. Produced by Beauvoir Films, this project highlights how natural disasters resonate through time, echoing contemporary climate concerns. "It doesn’t feel like a period piece," said producer Cécile Tollu-Polonowski, emphasizing the relevance of the story's themes today.

Romantic Journeys and Personal Discoveries

Stéphanie Argerich’s narrative feature, "Kyushu Moon," offers a different lens, focusing on Sarah, a journalist who finds unexpected connection during a work trip in Japan. The film, produced in collaboration with Intermezzo Films, addresses themes of modern solitude and interpersonal relationships in a fast-paced world. “It is a political film about a declining demographic left to fend for itself,” explained producer Luc Peter, highlighting its deeper societal implications.

A Rich Lineup of Projects

The lineup also features Valentin Merz's "Chocolat Amer," which explores the transformative journey of a young Tunisian in Zurich, and Ursula Meier’s "Quiet Land," a gripping murder mystery set against the backdrop of Montana. Other notable projects include Laura Israel's "Salut Robert," a portrait of photographer Robert Frank, and Kaveh Bakhtiari’s "The Smuggler," which sheds light on the struggles of a young Afghan migrant navigating a treacherous world.
