Teen Rescued After Fishing Boat Capsizes in Alaska

A 15-year-old boy, Derek Parker Aghnaanga, was rescued after spending approximately two days on top of an overturned skiff in the frigid Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. He had set out with his older brother, Sidney Kulowiyi, and cousin, Barton Rookok, for a fishing trip when their boat capsized. While Derek survived, both his brother and cousin lost their lives.

The Coast Guard began searching for the missing trio after family members reported them missing. Derek was found clinging to the capsized boat, experiencing symptoms of hypothermia. Rescuers from the fishing boat “Northwest Explorer” managed to pull him to safety, where he was warmed with blankets and hot packs.

During the rescue, Derek informed the crew that his brother was still under the skiff and that his cousin had slipped away the previous night. The bodies of both men were later recovered by authorities.
