From the outset, the film presents a peculiar premise, starting with an exhibition in New York entitled 'Traveling Exhibition of the Astral Compass – Journey to the Enigmatic East.' Here, Tom, playing the role of a security guard, prevents Jerry from entering, leading to a typical chase that triggers the magic of a forbidden compass, transporting them both to the Golden City, reminiscent of Beijing's Forbidden City. This marks the beginning of a convoluted adventure that diverges significantly from the simplicity of their original antics.

Once in Golden City, viewers are introduced to new characters such as the Phoenix Master and his sidekick Feeny, who bear little resemblance to the charm of Tom and Jerry. Described as a 'thicc Big Bird,' Feeny is part of a quest decreed by the Celestial Master to retrieve the compass from the clutches of the villainous Mega-Rat. However, rather than being the central figures in the story, Tom and Jerry are relegated to mere observers as the plot unfolds in a confusing blend of traditional Chinese aesthetics and chaotic animation styles that feel disconnected and incoherent.

The film's attempts at humor and cultural references are also met with skepticism, as scenes depicting Tom and Jerry mistaken for deities and a montage of them enjoying local cuisine juxtaposed with a rap number feels forced and out of place.
