Tom Lynagh Returns to Super Rugby as Wallabies Face Injury Setbacks

By Editor • September 9, 2026 • 1 min read

This weekend marks the much-anticipated return of Tom Lynagh to the rugby field, stepping in as the fly half for the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby AUS. His comeback comes at a crucial time, as teammate Carter Gordon faces a lengthy recovery from a leg injury.

Lynagh, who was the starting fly half for the Wallabies during the 2025 Tests against the British and Irish Lions, has struggled with injuries, managing only 18 minutes of play this season. However, under the guidance of new Reds coach Vern Cotter, Lynagh is set to play at least 40 minutes in the opening match against the Western Force at Ballymore.

Injury Woes for the Wallabies

The Reds will be looking to regroup as they approach the Super Rugby AUS beginning this Saturday. Carter Gordon, who had established himself as the Wallabies' primary fly half, is now out for two months after fracturing his fibula in a recent Test. This injury leaves coach Les Kiss with significant decisions to make ahead of upcoming matches against South Africa and the Bledisloe Cup.

Exciting Lineup Changes

In addition to Lynagh's return, the Western Force are making strategic adjustments, with Zac Lomax moving to the centres. Lomax, previously a rugby league winger, aims to make a strong impression in his new position. The match is expected to draw considerable attention as both teams prepare for next year’s World Cup, with players like Harry McLaughlin-Phillips and Kurtley Beale also poised to showcase their talents.
