Tragedy Strikes as Ferry Fire Leaves Five Dead and Over 80 Missing in the Philippines

A devastating incident unfolded off the coast of Palawan island, Philippines, where a ferry burst into flames late Wednesday night, leading to the tragic loss of five lives and leaving more than 80 individuals unaccounted for.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that the MV June Aster was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the fire ignited during its journey from Baseco in Manila to Coron. Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, with 43 individuals successfully saved from the inferno.
Footage from the Coast Guard depicted the vessel engulfed in flames, while responders worked diligently to recover the deceased. According to Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the situation remains fluid as rescue operations continue, and the number of missing persons could change as more information becomes available.
