Tragedy Strikes as Girl Dies in Queensland State Care: Investigation Launched

In a heartbreaking incident, a girl has reportedly died from a suspected drug overdose while under the care of the Queensland government in Brisbane. This tragedy follows a similar incident from last year when a 15-year-old Indigenous boy took his own life in an Ipswich residential care facility.

The Queensland government's Acting Minister for Child Safety, Ann Leahy, expressed profound sorrow regarding the child’s death. A spokesperson stated, "The loss of any child is an absolute tragedy," and confirmed that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will be conducted.

Calls for Accountability and Systemic Change

Debbie Kilroy, chief executive of Sisters Inside, voiced her devastation over the incident, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability. She emphasized that the ongoing crises affecting children in care must not be viewed as isolated events. Kilroy stated, "It should force us to ask much bigger questions about what we mean when we say our state is caring for our children."

Concerns from Care Workers

A youth worker, wishing to remain anonymous due to job security concerns, echoed the call for a review of the situation, highlighting the necessity of ensuring the physical safety of children in care. "All decisions leading up to that death need to be scrutinised, including why this child was in care to begin with," the worker remarked.

In response to the tragedy, a representative from the Department of Child Safety acknowledged the limitations of their commentary due to legislative restrictions but reaffirmed that the department conducts extensive reviews whenever a child dies while in care. Findings from these reviews are forwarded to the independent Queensland Child Death Review Board and the Queensland Coroner, adhering to legal protocols.
