Trailblazing Feminist Gloria Steinem Passes Away at 92

Gloria Steinem, an iconic figure in the American feminist movement, has passed away at the age of 92. Her foundation announced her death on Wednesday, marking the loss of a pioneering activist whose advocacy for women's rights spanned over five decades.

Steinem, who co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1971, was a vital force in championing women's civil, reproductive, and political rights. Her legacy includes founding key organizations such as the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, and the Women’s Media Center. Julie Taymor, who directed the film The Glorias based on Steinem’s life, described her journey as “a singular journey – an American leader who can speak to us all.”

Born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem's early life experiences with her mother's mental health struggles shaped her perspectives on social injustice. After graduating from Smith College, she began her career as a journalist, gaining widespread attention for her groundbreaking exposé, A Bunny’s Tale, which revealed the exploitation faced by Playboy bunnies.

Steinem’s activism intensified after attending an abortion speak-out in 1969, which she described as a pivotal moment in her life. The launch of Ms. Magazine represented a radical departure from conventional women’s magazines, addressing issues like abortion rights and domestic violence. Her commitment to feminism was grounded in intersectionality, as she noted, “If you’ve suffered discrimination, you’re sensitive to it on every level.”

In recognition of her contributions, Steinem was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013. She continued her advocacy work into her eighties, authoring several books and narrating documentaries focused on women's issues. Her marriage to David Bale in her later years served as a testament to her belief in the importance of choice in every aspect of life.
