UK Airports Experience Major Disruptions Due to Air Traffic Control Failure

By Editor • September 8, 2026 • 1 min read

Travelers across the UK faced significant disturbances on Tuesday as a technical failure in the air traffic control system brought operations at major airports to a standstill. With departures delayed and over 400 flights cancelled, passengers at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham were left in disarray.

National Air Traffic Control Services (NATS) announced that engineers had identified the issue approximately four hours after it began, stating the problem lay within their flight processing system. Despite this, it remained unclear how long it would take to restore normal operations, leaving many travelers stranded and frustrated.

Airlines like British Airways were particularly hard hit, with more than 100 flights cancelled or diverted, affecting tens of thousands of passengers. The airline expressed deep frustration over the situation, emphasizing that the incident was beyond their control. In a similar vein, both Ryanair and Wizz Air criticized NATS, calling for urgent reforms to prevent future occurrences of such disruptions.
