UK Denim Dilemma: Consumers Struggle with Fit and Care

A recent survey conducted by FatFace, a British lifestyle clothing brand, has revealed that many U.K. consumers are facing challenges in finding the perfect pair of jeans. With 45 percent reporting they have never found jeans that fit just right, it’s clear that the quest for denim perfection remains elusive for many.
Consumer Frustrations with Sizing
The survey indicated that inconsistent sizing among different brands poses significant hurdles, with 52 percent of respondents citing it as their primary issue. Women seem to experience this dilemma more acutely, with 19 percent saying they need to try on four or more pairs before finding a suitable fit, as opposed to 9 percent of men. Despite their ongoing search, 32 percent admitted to purchasing jeans they never ended up wearing.
Common Denim Care Mistakes
In addition to sizing troubles, U.K. consumers are mismanaging their denim care. Alarmingly, 40 percent wash their jeans after every wear or every few wears, with 23 percent doing so at temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). According to FatFace’s experts, jeans should ideally be washed every five to ten wears, with recommendations to spot-clean and air out denim instead of frequent washing. Washing at lower temperatures is also crucial to maintain the fabric's integrity and color.
Ellen Bowman, FatFace’s denim expert, emphasized, “One of the biggest mistakes when caring for denim is washing it too often and on too high a temperature.” To preserve jeans, it's advised to turn them inside out and fasten zippers before washing, while avoiding fabric softeners and tumble drying. If jeans shrink, soaking them in lukewarm water and gently stretching them back to shape can help restore their fit.
