Universal Studios Japan to Expand with New Land Lease

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is set to make its first expansion since opening in 2001, as the Osaka Municipal Government plans to lease an adjacent land plot to the theme park operator. The new site, spanning approximately 30,000 square meters, is expected to be returned by Nippon Steel in June 2024, with a lease contract anticipated to be finalized by 2028.
The expansion aims to introduce new attractions to draw even more visitors, building on USJ's impressive 16 million attendees in fiscal 2024. Osaka Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama expressed enthusiasm for the proposal, emphasizing its role in revitalizing the Osaka Bay area.
USJ is currently in discussions with the municipal government to negotiate a long-term lease while assessing potential soil contamination at the site.
