Apple's recent announcements regarding the Health app and the forthcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 have sparked excitement over new health features. However, users of older Apple Watch models can still enjoy many of these updates without needing to upgrade to the latest versions.
What You Need for Advanced Features
To benefit from the most advanced health features, such as the new heart rate sensor touted as the most accurate in any wearable, users will need to purchase the Apple Watch Series 12 or the Ultra 4. These models are equipped with a new S11 processing chip, which facilitates a more comprehensive health monitoring experience. The system promises to measure heart rate every five seconds and heart rate variability (HRV) every five minutes, offering a Recovery HRV score based on overnight data to assess stress levels more effectively.
Health App Updates Accessible to Many
Interestingly, while the upgraded Health app's full capabilities require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, many of its features do not necessitate the latest Apple Watch. The redesigned app will provide users with detailed insights and trends about their health, similar to existing features but with enhanced summaries and actionable recommendations.
VO2max Testing and Workout Buddy Features
Another accessible feature in the updated Health app is the on-demand VO2max test, which can be performed indoors. This test requires a heart rate sensor but does not mandate an Apple Watch; any device that can broadcast heart rate, including AirPods Pro 3 or third-party wearables, will suffice. Additionally, the new Workout Buddy feature, offering motivational voice prompts during workouts, will be available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and newer, as well as the Ultra 2 and SE 3, allowing for a more interactive fitness experience without needing to carry a phone.
