US Battery Installations Reach New Heights in Q2 of 2026

In a significant milestone for energy storage, the United States has recorded an impressive surge in battery installations during the second quarter of 2026. According to a recent report, 20.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new battery capacity was added, enough to power approximately 700,000 homes daily.

This remarkable growth is part of a broader trend that anticipates a total of 71 GWh of battery capacity to be installed throughout 2026, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. The expansion is largely attributed to declining battery costs and the increasing demand for energy storage as renewable sources like solar and wind power are integrated into the grid.

Utility-Scale Systems Lead the Charge

Utility-scale battery systems are driving this growth, accounting for the majority of the new installations in the record-setting quarter. Seven gigascale battery projects, each with a capacity exceeding one GWh, came online during this period. Shan Tomouk, energy storage and energy lead at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, noted, "It really came down to a handful of big projects."

Behind-the-Meter Batteries Show Mixed Results

While utility-scale systems dominate, the report also highlights growth in behind-the-meter battery installations, which include both residential and industrial systems. Data centers emerged as the primary contributors in this category, comprising around three-quarters of new commercial batteries. However, residential installations are facing challenges, with a projected 16% decline in 2026 compared to last year. Tomouk attributes this dip to the expiration of a tax credit that previously subsidized home battery systems.

Future Trends in Battery Manufacturing

The report also points to a notable trend towards domestic battery production as tariffs and new energy storage tax credits incentivize U.S.-made technologies. Currently, most battery systems rely on cells produced in China, although some are assembled in the U.S. Tomouk predicts that while manufacturing capacity is set to increase in the U.S., it may not meet demand until around 2030, potentially leading to price increases in the interim.
