Viral TikTok Video Leads to Conviction of Limpopo Man for Animal Cruelty

A TikTok video featuring a Limpopo man slapping donkeys has resulted in his conviction for animal cruelty under South Africa's Animal Protection Act. Nano Masalesa, known on social media as "Skeem Noa," was found guilty after an investigation by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) followed the video’s widespread circulation.
Incident Sparks NSPCA Investigation
The controversial footage, which emerged in September 2022, depicted Masalesa running alongside a cart pulled by four donkeys, driven by a young boy in Mohodi, Limpopo. In the video, he halted the animals, shouted at them, and slapped them repeatedly, causing visible distress as they attempted to flee.
Court Ruling and Conditions
Following the incident, NSPCA inspectors traced Masalesa and obtained a search warrant. They visited the property on October 4, 2022, but found Masalesa absent in Pretoria. Instead, they met with his uncle, the donkeys' owner, who surrendered the animals, including a suckling foal, to the NSPCA. After treatment for parasites, the donkeys were made available for adoption.
The case culminated in a hearing at the Bochum Magistrate’s Court, where Masalesa was convicted. His sentencing was postponed for three years, during which he must pay R5,000 to the Polokwane SPCA for the donkeys' care. Failure to comply by September 19, 2029, could lead to fines or imprisonment, while meeting the conditions will result in a caution, keeping the conviction on his record.
