Volkswagen's Osnabrück Plant Transitions to Defence Production

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 1 min read

Volkswagen has announced a significant shift in its operations at the Osnabrück plant, marking a new chapter for the facility as it prepares to pivot from automotive manufacturing to defence production. The company has reached a preliminary agreement to transfer ownership of the plant to the state government of Lower Saxony and Israeli investment firm Aurelius Capital.

Starting in mid-2027, the Osnabrück facility will commence the production of advanced equipment for Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, the organization renowned for developing the Iron Dome missile defence technology. This transition comes at a time when Volkswagen is navigating through challenging economic waters, reflecting broader trends in the German economy.

The move follows the recent electoral success of the far-right AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, highlighting the shifting political landscape in Germany and its potential implications for industries across the nation.
