At the recent BRICS summit in New Delhi, Chinese President Xi Jinping took the opportunity to promote his vision for artificial intelligence, positioning China as a leader in the global AI landscape amid competition with the United States.
During his address on Sunday, Xi announced plans for a BRICS “community” dedicated to open-source AI development, aimed at fostering collaboration among member nations. He outlined initiatives that would involve the development of large language models and the organization of seminars and training courses to enhance AI capabilities within the group.
On Saturday, Xi welcomed BRICS countries to join a new coalition of nearly 30 nations, the World AI Cooperation Organization, emphasizing the importance of strengthening AI collaboration and openness. However, a joint declaration from the summit did not specifically endorse Xi's proposals, instead calling for broader international cooperation to improve AI accessibility while ensuring safety and reliability.
