Zuma Shakes Up eThekwini Mayoral Race Amid Candidate Controversy

In a surprising turn of events, Jacob Zuma has replaced the uMkhonto Wesizwe party's (MKP) eThekwini mayoral candidate just 12 days after her selection, amid serious allegations regarding the candidate selection process. Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi, who was appointed to lead the party's campaign in eThekwini, has been ousted as the party investigates claims of manipulation in its candidate lists.

Apostle Mxolisi Phakathi has been named the new candidate as the MKP aims to assert its dominance in the metro ahead of the local government elections scheduled for November 4. The party is currently facing allegations that legitimate candidates were removed from the lists submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), undermining the integrity of its internal processes.

Zuma, the party leader, announced the initiation of an investigation into these claims on Wednesday, which led to the immediate removal of Hlophe-Mkhwanazi and Sibonelo Maphumulo, a member of the National Party Liaison Committee (NPLC). However, another poll from the Social Research Foundation reported a lower figure of 33%, suggesting a more competitive landscape.

Despite the apparent electoral advantage, the party's internal strife raises concerns about its ability to maintain momentum. Hlophe-Mkhwanazi, a relatively unknown figure in politics, had been selected based on her commitment to address pressing issues such as water shortages and housing shortages. Her abrupt removal might affect the party's outreach efforts. Phakathi, her replacement, has a background in the Twelve Apostles Church in Christ and previously served in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature. However, the party's ability to change its candidate names with the IEC is now limited, as nominations officially closed on August 28.
