Gauff, the fourth seed, is aiming for her third Grand Slam title and will face fellow American Iva Jovic next. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka fought through both physical discomfort and mental hurdles to defeat Elise Mertens in a tough three-set match, finishing at 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. An emotional Osaka acknowledged the mental challenges she faced during the match, apologizing for her frustrations on the court.

American Players Struggle

The day was not without its disappointments, particularly for American players, as past finalists like Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova were eliminated in the third round. Fritz, who had been performing strongly, fell to Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in a surprising five-set match. Keys suffered a heartbreaking defeat to China's Zheng Qinwen, who staged a remarkable comeback after trailing 5-0 in the final set. Anisimova, last year's runner-up, also faced defeat at the hands of Anastasia Potapova. Young wildcard Michael Zheng was among other Americans who couldn't advance, losing to Frenchman Arthur Gea.
