Sharp kayak folds aluminum sheet into unsinkable hull with cork seat

A new kayak, named Sharp, has been designed by Guillaume Bloget during a residency at Rhizome in France’s Morvan region. Constructed from folded aluminum sheet and cork, the kayak utilizes a newly acquired press brake to shape its metallic hull. The design aims to enhance performance by efficiently converting paddle strokes into forward motion.

The hull’s structure relies entirely on folding without the need for an internal frame. This double-wall construction makes Sharp unsinkable, with folds serving as ribs and surfaces providing structural integrity. Inside, a cork seat adds comfort and warmth, contrasting with the kayak’s angular aluminum exterior, which reflects its surroundings.

The final version of Sharp was developed through a hands-on process, with craftsman Antoine Rivière creating the first full-scale prototype. The kayak is now produced on demand, emphasizing local production and maintaining a close connection to its workshop origins. The design combines industrial fabrication techniques with a focus on functionality and aesthetics.
