Northeast Neighbor to Neighbor Shuts Down, Passes Funds to Healing House KC

Northeast Neighbor to Neighbor (NNN), the nonprofit founded by Dr. Elaine Joslyn in 2005 to support uninsured residents with healthcare costs, has officially closed its doors after two decades of service. Dr. Joslyn, who began her journey in medicine in 1994, started NNN to address the urgent need for affordable healthcare in the community.

Initially funded by donations and contributions from those who benefited from NNN’s services, the organization offered a range of assistance, including specialist visits and surgeries. Over the years, events like the Kansas City Track Club's annual Cliff Hanger run helped bolster their funds, generating up to $9,000 annually.

Despite a decrease in demand following the Affordable Care Act in 2010, NNN continued to provide essential services, including eye exams and vouchers for non-pharmaceutical items in partnership with Spalitto’s Pharmacy.

With Dr. Joslyn’s retirement in 2017, NNN gradually shifted its focus, and the board decided to close the organization. They chose to donate the remaining funds, totaling $7,000, to Healing House KC, a faith-based program aimed at substance abuse recovery. This decision reflects NNN’s commitment to continue supporting the community’s health needs.

Bobbi Jo Reed, founder of Healing House KC, expressed gratitude for NNN’s legacy, noting that their contribution will enhance the support available to those in need. The Kansas City Track Club plans to direct future donations from the Cliff Hanger run to Healing House KC, ensuring that NNN's mission lives on.
