Unlocking Sleep: The Surprising Truths Behind Our Struggles

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 1 min read

In our quest for a good night’s sleep, many find themselves caught in a web of contradictions. Attempting to force slumber often leads to the very opposite outcome. As the demands of daily life encroach upon our rest, we may actually need to loosen our grip on control.

Sleep can be an elusive experience, especially in a world inundated with sleep-tracking gadgets and endless supplements. The irony lies in our efforts to optimize sleep, which can transform the natural act of resting into a pressured task. Renowned psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl illustrated this beautifully by comparing sleep to a dove that lands near us, remaining only as long as we don't chase it.

This paradox of intention reveals that the harder we strive to sleep, the more we struggle. Compounding this is the control paradox, where our desire to manage every aspect of life only highlights how little is truly under our command. Despite efforts like avoiding screens and sipping chamomile tea, we often wrestle with sleeplessness.

Moreover, as we layer on more sleep aids, from lotions to white noise machines, hoping to find the ultimate solution, we lose sight of the fact that rest is not about accumulation. Instead, it requires a shift in mindset; we must detach from the notion that effort equates to rest.

In our fatigue, we make poor choices—binge-eating or scrolling through social media instead of embracing stillness. To truly rejuvenate, we may need to embrace the art of doing less, allowing sleep to come to us naturally, like that forgotten dove.
