Rubén Valdez Unveils Desert Sanctuary for Reflection

In the tranquil desert of Todos Santos, Mexico, Rubén Valdez Practice has introduced the Spiritual Enclosure, a circular space dedicated to reflection. This non-religious ceremony area, commissioned by Paradero Hotels, is designed to harmonize with its arid surroundings, partially sunk into the earth with a concrete ring that emerges just above the ground.

The entrance features a uniquely angled ramp, guiding visitors through a series of turns that gradually unveil the expansive inner sanctum. This deliberate approach enhances the transition from the stark desert into the serene enclosure, echoing its ceremonial purpose.

Inside, the raw earth contrasts with minimal wooden benches and a polished obsidian disc, reminiscent of ancient Mesoamerican tezcatl mirrors, serving as a focal point for contemplation. The enclosure, oriented along the east-west axis, allows the sun to play across its surfaces, marking the passage of time with shifting shadows.
