Youth Embrace Russian Drone Brigade Amidst Ongoing Conflict

As the conflict in Ukraine continues to rage on, a surprising trend has emerged among some of Russia's youth: a willingness to join the drone brigade known as Kaskad, rather than shying away from military service. This unit, touted by President Vladimir Putin as vital for the nation’s survival, offers a unique opportunity for recruits to engage in a less dangerous form of warfare.

Kaskad, described by pro-war bloggers as a "prerogative for officers," is located in a secret area within Russian-occupied Ukraine. It has gained attention as a prestigious unit, attracting recruits eager to enhance their professional standing while avoiding frontline combat. Analysts suggest that the risks associated with operating drones are significantly lower compared to conventional ground forces.

Since the mobilization began in 2022, hundreds of thousands of Russian men have been summoned to fight, facing a dire situation with mounting casualties. In contrast, the Kaskad brigade allows its members to serve for brief periods—typically three to eight months—returning home as heroes, often celebrated on social media for their service.

The British Ministry of Defense has noted that enlisting in Kaskad allows elite figures to bypass regular military service requirements while potentially gaining favor with the Kremlin. This is evident as over 270 pro-Kremlin regional deputies and many young activists have enlisted, including notable figures like Alexander Malikov, who recently transformed his social media presence after joining the brigade.

Malikov, previously engaged in local council activities, framed his enlistment as a patriotic duty, although he remained vague about his specific role within Kaskad. Dmitry Sablin, a long-time member of the Russian parliament, has been at the helm of Kaskad since its formation in late 2022, overseeing a cadre of at least 54 drone crews operating various reconnaissance and combat drones.

The advantages of serving in Kaskad are evident in the career trajectories of former members. For instance, Yevgeny Pervyshov transitioned from a low-ranking deputy to a war veteran and recently became a governor after serving with Kaskad. Similarly, Lena Kolesnikova, a rare female member of the brigade, has leveraged her service to seek a parliamentary nomination after returning home.

Political analysts recognize the strategic significance of Kaskad for the Kremlin, as officials use their military service as a springboard for leadership roles, thereby reinforcing a narrative of patriotism in Russian society. However, the living conditions for Kaskad members starkly contrast with those on the front lines, as they are often stationed safely away from direct conflict.

Despite the facade of prestige, the reality remains grim for many soldiers mobilized during the conflict. Protests have surfaced among families of those conscripted, voicing grievances about the ongoing war and the harsh realities faced by their loved ones.
