Constance Jaeggi's Photographic Journey into the Heart of Escaramuza

Constance Jaeggi's artistic path has taken her from the serene suburbs of Switzerland to the vibrant landscapes of Texas, driven by her lifelong passion for horses. After relocating to the U.S. to further her equestrian ambitions and education, Jaeggi became deeply immersed in ranch life, spending her weekends riding and exploring the culture surrounding these majestic animals.

Her fascination with the human-horse bond led her to photography, allowing her to capture the intricate relationship between people and horses. It was during her adventures at rodeos that she discovered the captivating tradition of escaramuza, a female-only event that is part of the Mexican national sport charrería.

Inspired by the valiant women of the Mexican Revolution, escaramuza showcases teams of women executing intricate, choreographed routines while dressed in vibrant, traditional attire. When the Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth invited her to create an exhibition on this tradition, Jaeggi dove into research, uncovering the rich history and evolving gender dynamics within charrería.

Her ongoing series, "Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home," is currently on display at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. The exhibition features portraits of Mexican-American women adorned in their stunning regalia, and their stories are complemented by poetry from ire’ne lara silva and Angelina Sáenz, who reflect the experiences of these remarkable riders.

Jaeggi’s work highlights the challenges and triumphs of women balancing demanding roles while participating in a sport that demands both elegance and risk. As she continues to explore the intersection of culture and identity through her lens, the exhibition remains on view until August 23.
