Sherri Papini's narrative surrounding her 2016 disappearance continues to unfold in the upcoming Investigation Discovery documentary, Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie. As the former kidnap hoaxer shares a revised account of her story, her family grapples with the implications of her actions and the truth behind her claims.

On November 2, 2016, Papini, then 34, went out for a jog near her home in Redding, California, and vanished without a trace, prompting a nationwide search. After 22 days, she was found roughly 150 miles away, visibly harmed and wearing a chain around her waist. Her initial claim involved being abducted by two Hispanic women at gunpoint, but inconsistencies soon arose. DNA found on her clothing did not match her husband, Keith Papini, but was linked to an ex-boyfriend, James Reyes, who later revealed that she had stayed with him during her disappearance.

After pleading guilty in April 2022 to federal charges of making false statements and mail fraud, Papini served nearly 11 months of an 18-month sentence and was ordered to repay over $300,000 for search costs. In her new documentary, she drastically shifts her story, alleging that Reyes was her captor, despite previously admitting to an affair with him. “There was no consent,” she asserts, describing her injuries in graphic detail.

Her family members have offered various perspectives on her claims, reflecting a mix of support and skepticism. Her father, Richard Graeff, admitted that he still has unanswered questions about the truth of Papini's ordeal. In contrast, her mother, Loretta Graeff, suggests that Sherri's departure with Reyes was not a kidnapping but a search for happiness amid personal struggles, and she emphasized that Sherri would never abandon her children.

While acknowledging that Reyes bears some responsibility, she expressed doubt that her daughter orchestrated the ordeal independently, questioning the feasibility of the severe injuries Papini sustained. Meanwhile, Keith's sister, Suzanne Papini, maintains that Sherri was likely unaware of what would transpire that day, recalling their emotional bond and her observations of Sherri's brokenness.

Reyes, who was never charged with a crime despite passing a polygraph during the investigation, responded to the documentary's revelations, indicating that he would consult legal counsel regarding the allegations. Papini's older sister, Sheila Koester, spoke about her sister's need for attention and the trauma they endured as children, expressing a lingering love for Sherri despite the chaos surrounding her actions.
