In the heart of Stockholm's Frihamnen port area, a transformative project named X-Trakojan is reshaping a neglected plot of land into a vibrant community space. Spearheaded by designer Nicholas Niemen, this initiative repurposes local construction waste to create functional public furniture, emphasizing sustainable urban development.

The project pays homage to the area’s history, drawing its name from ‘Extrakojan,’ a former restaurant that once served harbor workers. Today, the site has been reimagined with salvaged materials, addressing the community’s need for public infrastructure while showcasing the potential of discarded resources.

Niemen’s innovative designs utilize various materials, such as wooden joists, concrete footings, and steel profiles, to construct seating and tables. Notably, the furniture includes stools made from plywood and concrete paving stones, highlighting an eco-friendly approach to urban design.
