A Father's Legacy Soars: Len Neale's Journey in Aviation

In the heart of Central Queensland, 74-year-old Len Neale is not just a pilot; he is a custodian of his father's unfulfilled dream. After years spent working as a tradesman and raising a family, Neale took to the skies, building his own aircraft and breathing new life into a piece of local aviation history.

Neale's passion for flying ignited in childhood, and today, he continues to indulge in his lifelong obsession by piloting his home-built plane, the J6 Karatoo, affectionately named "The Spirit of Smoky Creek." This project, which took seven years to complete, reflects a blend of American design and Australian engineering with its Jabiru engine.

His journey was deeply influenced by his father, who dreamed of constructing a plane but was hindered by the demands of family life and financial constraints. After his father's passing in 1989, Neale resolved to fulfill that dream. He not only built the J6 Karatoo but also restored an aircraft steeped in history: the "Miss Sandgate." Originally crafted in 1936 by Russian immigrant Vladimir Slyusarenko, this plane sat forgotten for decades until Neale and a friend rescued it from a shed in Gympie.

Neale's restoration of Miss Sandgate was a labor of love, and even inspired the name of his third child, Cameron Heath, as a nod to the aircraft's legacy. "I fantasized about flying it when I was eight," he reminisced, recalling his childhood dreams. Though he recently retired the Miss Sandgate from flying, he fondly remembers the journeys it took him on, including a meticulous eight-hop trip to Narromine in New South Wales.

Every flight Neale takes encapsulates a connection between generations, a tribute to his father’s aspirations and his own dedication to aviation. The Sport Aircraft Association of Australia’s president, Myles Breitkreutz, has been a long-time friend and collaborator, assisting Neale in the intricate process of building and registering his planes.

As he dons his flight goggles and takes to the skies, Len Neale embodies not just the spirit of an aviation enthusiast but also the realization of a dream that transcends time.
