Hurricane Lala Hits Hawaii, Causing Major Power Outages

Hurricane Lala made landfall in Hawaii on August 15, 2026, unleashing powerful winds and heavy rainfall, leaving over 40,000 residents without electricity.
As of 2:14 p.m. HST, reports indicated that 42,889 customers were affected by the outages, with the majority on the Big Island and in Maui County. The National Hurricane Center warned of severe conditions, predicting rainfall of 10 to 20 inches on the Big Island and up to 25 inches in some areas, creating risks of flooding and mudslides.
Hawaiian Electric cautioned customers about the possibility of prolonged power outages, with crews assessing significant damage along a 42-mile stretch of transmission lines on the Big Island. The hurricane, classified as Category 1 with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, prompted the closure of Hilo International Airport and plans to shut Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport by 2 p.m. HST. Additionally, commercial ports across Hawaii Island and Maui County were also closed.
