Embracing Grief Amidst the Wildflowers of WA

Each year, Leonie Aspin journeys from New Zealand to Western Australia’s Mid West, where vibrant wildflowers bloom following winter rains, a tribute to her late partner, Ray Fraser.

After Fraser's passing from brain cancer in 2022, Aspin felt compelled to return to the wildflowers they once explored together. "I just missed the wildflowers, and it got to the point where I had to test my little heart again," she reflected.

As a volunteer wildflower tour guide in Morawa, Aspin shares their passion for nature with visitors, revealing both popular sights and hidden floral treasures. She poignantly noted, "I know he'll never be there again, but it just helps fill that little empty hole in my heart." Aspin draws a parallel between her emotional journey and the seasonal transformation of the landscape.

Tourism in the Mid West is thriving, with visitors flocking to admire the blooms. Local communities benefit significantly from this influx, as Aspin pointed out the needs for food, accommodation, and fuel during the busy season.

Among the visitors is Tom Pilkington, who praised the town's hospitality, calling it a lovely place filled with friendly locals ready to guide explorers. Others, like Carla Read and Ray Hatton from Perth, expressed their newfound appreciation for the region's beauty, hoping to make wildflower touring an annual tradition.
