A Scottish Safari: Nature's Wonders Await on Ailsa Craig

In the ever-evolving world of travel, the allure of distant lands often draws attention away from the hidden gems closer to home. This summer, I set out on a journey to rediscover the wonders of my own backyard. My destination? Ailsa Craig, a small Scottish island known for its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant wildlife, accessible via a safari experience offered by Glenapp Castle.

The journey began with a 90-minute flight from London to Glasgow, followed by a drive through the picturesque South Ayrshire countryside. It was early morning when we arrived in Glasgow, and after a short transfer, we soon found ourselves mesmerized by the dramatic coastal views that unfolded around us. The island of Ailsa Craig, with its stunning cliffs and rich seabird population, loomed ahead, resembling a scene straight from a nature documentary.

Glenapp Castle offers two safari options: a multi-day expedition through the Hebrides or a shorter day trip to Ailsa Craig. We opted for the latter, eager to explore both the castle's luxurious accommodations and the island’s rugged wilderness. Our stay at the aptly named Nest cottage began our wildlife adventure amongst flourishing gardens alive with birds and butterflies.

On the day of the safari, we feasted on a hearty Scottish breakfast before heading to the port town of Girvan to meet our skipper, Roddy. With decades of experience as a local harbor master and RNLI coxswain, Roddy was the perfect guide for our nine-mile journey across the choppy waters towards Ailsa Craig. As we approached the island, the sight of swirling seabirds became clearer. Ailsa Craig is home to an impressive 70,000 birds, including gannets, razorbills, and kittiwakes. The sight was breathtaking, a reminder of nature’s grandeur and the sheer numbers of wildlife that thrive here. The cliffs, once home to human inhabitants, now serve as a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures.

Upon landing on the rocky shore, we set up a picnic overlooking the pebbled beach. To our delight, a curious seal surfaced nearby, quickly followed by a second seal sunbathing on the rocks. Our picnic was a delightful affair, accompanied by the antics of these charming marine mammals. As we enjoyed our spread of sandwiches and salads, the ocean revealed even more surprises, with porpoises gracefully gliding through the waves nearby.

The experience felt like an unplanned adventure, where the true magic lay in the unexpected encounters with wildlife. Glenapp’s ocean safari was not merely a boat trip but an immersive experience in nature, proving that extraordinary wildlife encounters don’t always require international travel.
