A Scottish Safari: Rediscovering the Wild Beauty of Ailsa Craig

In an age where travel often means hopping on a plane for far-off lands, a recent journey to Scotland's wild Ailsa Craig reminded me of the beauty waiting closer to home. After years spent traveling the globe, I resolved to explore more of the UK, starting with Glenapp Castle's ocean safari in South Ayrshire.
After a brief flight from London to Glasgow, my partner and I set off on a picturesque drive through the Scottish countryside. As we navigated the winding roads, the gray cityscape of Glasgow gave way to stunning coastal views, with the imposing silhouette of Ailsa Craig emerging from the mist like an ancient fortress. This island, famed for its seabird population, was to be the centerpiece of our adventure.
Glenapp Castle offers two types of safari experiences: a multi-day boat journey through the Hebrides or a day trip to Ailsa Craig. We opted for the latter, excited to experience the luxurious accommodations at the castle while immersing ourselves in the rugged natural beauty surrounding it.
Upon checking into the Nest cottage, nestled within the castle grounds, we felt as if our wildlife adventure had already begun. Surrounded by vibrant gardens alive with birds and butterflies, we unwound before our ocean excursion.
The following morning, after a hearty Scottish breakfast, we made our way to Girvan to meet our skipper, Roddy. With his extensive experience as an RNLI coxswain, Roddy was the perfect guide for our voyage across the lively waters toward Ailsa Craig. As we donned our life jackets, the excitement built for the nine-mile journey ahead. A tip for future travelers: bring seasickness remedies if you enjoy a hearty meal!
As we approached the island, the dark cloud hovering above it transformed into a whirlwind of seabirds. Ailsa Craig is home to around 70,000 birds, with gannets dominating the skies. Roddy pointed out various species, including razorbills and kittiwakes, making the experience all the more enriching. Witnessing such an extraordinary wildlife spectacle in its natural setting was a profound reminder of nature's splendor.
After navigating the rocky shore, we disembarked at a daunting pontoon and settled down for a lavish picnic on the pebbled beach. Just as we began to enjoy our meal, a curious seal popped its head up from the water, intrigued by our presence. Watching seals in their natural habitat never fails to enchant, especially as another joined it on the shore, basking in the sun.
Our picnic turned into an impromptu wildlife show when dolphins surfaced nearby, gracefully swimming through the waves. The experience felt unscripted and magical, a testament to the unpredictability of nature.
What made this adventure unforgettable was not just the breathtaking scenery but the authentic wildlife encounters that unfolded naturally. Glenapp’s ocean safari showcases how luxury can coexist with the wild, providing comfort and expertise while immersing travelers in nature's beauty, reminding us that sometimes, the best adventures are right at our doorstep.
