A Serene Manhattan Retreat Transforms into a Parisian Jewel Box

In the bustling heart of Midtown Manhattan, a hidden gem has emerged, turning a dated one-bedroom apartment into a tranquil Parisian-inspired retreat. Nestled in the quaint Sutton Place neighborhood, known for its elegant prewar architecture and pocket parks, this 850 sq ft co-op was envisioned as a serene escape by its new owners, a couple from Connecticut.

The couple's journey began with a fondness for the area, having previously enjoyed a family apartment in another Emery Roth building. When they discovered their new abode, however, they faced a challenge: its interiors were overwhelmed by late-1990s aesthetics, from dark wood accents to a marble bathroom that felt out of place. "I thought we could do something great with it," the wife reflected, eager to unleash the apartment's potential.

To bring their vision to life, they enlisted the expertise of designer Lauren Carlucci, who had recently launched her studio. Carlucci embraced the challenge of creating a calm, inviting space that contrasted with the hustle of the city. "She wanted a Parisian jewel box, so that’s exactly what we delivered," Carlucci stated, indicating her commitment to the client’s desire for a design that felt both clean and restful.

Stripping away the outdated features, Carlucci redefined the apartment’s layout, opting for an open flow that sacrificed some closet space for a more expansive kitchen and bathroom. The removal of heavy moldings and a cumbersome bannister transformed the sunken living room into a vibrant and connected space, accented by cream walls, rich burgundy furnishings, and a striking chartreuse silk carpet.

Original details from the 1930s were lovingly preserved and highlighted, with soft curves and Art Deco elements seamlessly integrated into the new design. Upon entering, guests are greeted by green lacquered closets and an art deco motif that carries through the apartment, creating a cohesive narrative. The living room centers around a new fireplace, showcasing the couple’s personal art collection and drawing attention to the refined mantel that mirrors the door profiles.

The kitchen maintains a serene off-white palette, complemented by a playful red banquette and a leopard-print chair, ideal for morning coffee. Carlucci elevated the bathroom with dark millwork and polished nickel, featuring a surprise handmade tile shower enclosure that adds a touch of whimsy.

In the bedroom, tranquility reigns with taupe walls and a plush turquoise carpet. The couple's existing furniture was reimagined, including cherished Art Deco nightstands and a sofa revitalized for comfort. "We wanted it to be luxurious, but without being fussy," the wife concluded, expressing their delight in the transformed space.
