A Tribute to Japan’s Lost Modernist Marvels

In her latest work, architect and author Naomi Pollock sheds light on Japan's fleeting modernist architecture, presenting an eye-opening chronicle of structures lost to time. Living in Japan for over thirty years, Pollock has witnessed the country’s unique relationship with its built heritage, where even celebrated architectural feats are often demolished.

Her book, titled Vanishing Japan: Modern Architecture, Gone But Not Forgotten, features around 90 notable buildings, primarily constructed in the post-war era, that have succumbed to a culture favoring the new and ephemeral. Among these are works by renowned architects like Arata Isozaki and Kenzo Tange, showcasing the breadth of creativity that has shaped Japan’s architectural landscape.
