AI Observatory Aims to Bridge Data Gaps in AI Usage Research

The landscape of artificial intelligence usage is becoming clearer, thanks to a new initiative called the AI Observatory. This project, spearheaded by Anka Reuel, a PhD candidate at Stanford's STAIR Lab, seeks to provide an independent analysis of how users are interacting with AI models like Claude and ChatGPT, filling a crucial void left by data selectively shared by companies.

Current reports from AI giants such as Anthropic and OpenAI often present a narrow view of AI usage, primarily focusing on professional applications. Reuel points out that these reports lack independent verification, leading to potential blind spots in understanding the broader implications of AI. The AI Observatory aggregates data from seven existing datasets, analyzing real interactions from users who consented to share their conversations, aiming to create a more comprehensive picture.

Initial findings from the Observatory reveal significant disparities in the way different AI models are utilized. For instance, nearly half of the conversations analyzed by the Observatory would have been omitted from Anthropic's Economic Index, which focuses heavily on work-related dialogues. Sensitive topics such as health discussions, harassment, and even illicit content were notably more prevalent in the AI Observatory's data. This suggests that the reality of AI interactions often diverges from the sanitized narratives pushed by companies.

Moreover, the study indicates that user engagement with AI has evolved between 2023 and 2025. Conversations have grown longer, with an increase in casual exchanges, hinting at a rising trend of users seeking companionship from AI. Interestingly, instances of sensitive content have declined, possibly indicating improved safeguards by AI platforms.

The research also highlights distinct usage patterns across various models. For example, users frequently turn to Grok and Gemini for retrieving information, while ChatGPT is predominantly used for homework help. The Observatory's analysis further notes that different versions of the same model, such as ChatGPT powered by GPT-3.5 versus GPT-4, exhibit divergent interaction styles, with the latter fostering more in-depth conversations.

Despite the Observatory's efforts, it is important to note that the dataset analyzed comprises only a fraction of the vast amounts of data accessible to major AI companies. For instance, Anthropic's Economic Index examines data from over a million conversations, while OpenAI's ChatGPT report includes insights from 1.5 million. This disparity raises concerns about the representativeness of the Observatory's findings, especially regarding sensitive use cases that may not be willingly shared by users.

In light of these challenges, the AI Observatory aims to expand its dataset to facilitate more robust research into AI usage. Reuel emphasizes the importance of transparency, advocating for AI companies to collaborate with independent researchers while safeguarding user privacy. Until then, decisions made based on AI usage data may risk being uninformed, as critical insights remain locked within proprietary company reports.
