AMC Theaters Takes a Bold Step into Indie Film Distribution with New Label

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 2 min read

AMC Theaters is set to shake up the independent film scene with the launch of its own distribution label, Leawood Films. This move follows the theater chain's impressive box office success with “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which grossed an astounding $261 million globally. The initiative aims to give a platform to indie films that struggle to find distribution, positioning AMC as a significant player in the indie market.

Leawood Films is backed by a formidable advisory board that includes industry veterans such as Toby Emmerich, former Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group; Ricky Strauss, ex-President of Marketing at The Walt Disney Studios; and Kyle Davies, previously President of Domestic Distribution at Paramount Pictures. Notably, Davies will leave his role at Bleecker Street to join this new venture.

The focus of Leawood Films will be on small to medium-sized releases, steering clear of the music and concert documentaries that have characterized AMC's recent successes. Instead, the label aims to bring diverse films to audiences, providing an essential home for titles that might otherwise go unseen.

In a strategic move, AMC has assured that Leawood Films will not interfere with its existing relationships with traditional studio partners. However, there is some tension in the industry, as the surprise release of “The Eras Tour” caught rival distributors off guard, impacting their box office performance.

To mitigate risk, AMC plans to acquire completed films or those fully financed, avoiding any involvement in production or development. This suggests a proactive approach at film festivals like Sundance, where they will seek out promising projects. Furthermore, Leawood Films is committed to a 45-day exclusive theatrical window and a 90-day period for streaming, ensuring that films receive adequate exposure.

The venture comes at a challenging time, with AMC facing around $4 billion in debt and a stock price hovering around $2.64. Despite these challenges, the potential for Leawood Films to elevate overlooked festival entries is a silver lining. AMC has ventured into distribution before with Open Road Films, which saw modest success with titles like “Nightcrawler” and even won an Oscar for “Spotlight” before selling its stake in 2017.

AMC CEO Adam Aron expressed optimism about the new label, emphasizing a collaborative approach with other exhibitors to enhance the range of films available to theatergoers. He believes that there is a strong appetite for diverse cinematic offerings and that Leawood Films can provide a valuable service, ensuring that deserving films reach the big screen.
