American Missionary Kevin Rideout Freed After Nine Months in Niger Captivity

Kevin Rideout, a 50-year-old American missionary, has been released after being abducted in Niger last October. His organization, Serving in Mission International, confirmed that he is in good health and receiving care from US officials.

Rideout was kidnapped on October 21, 2022, in Niamey by three armed men, and details surrounding his release remain scarce. Former President Donald Trump took to social media to announce Rideout’s return, stating, “Kevin, the United States of America looks forward to welcoming you HOME. Glad to have helped!”

The US government had prioritized Rideout’s release as part of its strategy in the Sahel region, which has been plagued by extremist violence. The military junta that took power in Niger in 2023 has faced criticism for the deteriorating security situation, as the country grapples with increasing attacks linked to groups like al-Qaida and the Islamic State.

The US embassy in Niamey had previously alerted American citizens about the risks of kidnapping in Niger, especially in its capital. The security landscape remains troubling, with civilian deaths rising sharply following the ousting of former President Mohamed Bazoum. The situation has prompted a shift in US focus to coastal West African nations in an effort to combat the spread of extremism.
