Andover Audio's FreePlay: A Stylish Take on Portable Hi-Fi
By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 1 min read
Andover Audio is redefining portable audio with its new FreePlay Bluetooth speaker, merging durability with a chic aesthetic that’s often missing in outdoor sound systems. Unlike typical rugged speakers, which flaunt their robust designs, FreePlay opts for a more understated look, intended to blend seamlessly into both home and outdoor environments.
Bob Hazelwood, the company’s Director of Engineering and Product Management, emphasized this philosophy: "We didn’t overcook the design with multiple folds or excessive protective elements." The result is a nine-pound speaker with a refined silhouette and earthy finishes available in Ivory, Olive, and Slate, making it suitable for any setting.
The FreePlay features a distinctive curved front showcasing its four drivers through radial grilles, reminiscent of the sleek home audio systems from the late '90s. This design choice is both aesthetic and functional, aligning with Dieter Rams’ principles of simplicity in design.
What truly sets FreePlay apart is its commitment to stereo sound. It incorporates two 25mm dome tweeters, two 5.25-inch woofers, and a rear-mounted passive radiator, ensuring that even in a portable format, the speaker maintains a depth of sound. Hazelwood stated, "Stereo was the big one," highlighting their refusal to compromise on audio quality.
Despite its portability, FreePlay doesn’t skimp on features. It boasts an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, a battery life of up to 24 hours, Bluetooth 6.0, and a USB-C port for charging. It also offers Qi-compatible wireless charging and the ability to link up to 100 units for synchronized playback.
Available for $429 from Andover Audio and Amazon, FreePlay represents a thoughtful blend of high-fidelity sound and stylish design, challenging the conventions of what portable audio should look and sound like.
