ANURA: A Vehicle Designed for the Self-Sufficient Lifestyle in Rural Scandinavia

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

In a striking fusion of tradition and innovation, Love Björklund, a Transportation Design student at Umeå Institute of Design, is reimagining the future of vehicles for rural Scandinavia. His master thesis, ANURA, addresses the unique challenges faced by communities that prioritize self-repair and resourcefulness.

Björklund, who grew up in this environment, notes that residents often rely on their own skills when things go awry, as waiting for professional help is not always an option. Modern vehicles, however, are increasingly complex and less amenable to user repairs, a trend Björklund critiques as detrimental to rural lifestyles.

His concept, ANURA, envisions a vehicle tailored for the year 2040, emphasizing user authority and repairability. The design incorporates practical features such as detachable headlights that double as lanterns, a running board that transforms into a loading ramp, and a modular approach to vehicle components. Each element is crafted to be functional and adaptable, encouraging users to engage with their vehicles in meaningful ways.

With ANURA, Björklund is not just designing a vehicle; he is championing a philosophy that respects the capabilities of its users, ensuring that they can maintain and modify their vehicles to meet their needs.
