Elevated Living: Innovative Transformation of a Warehouse in Ecuador

In the tranquil setting of Perucho, Ecuador, a unique architectural project has revitalized a weary warehouse into a vibrant home and artist studio, showcasing the ingenuity of local design. La Cabina de la Curiosidad, led by architects Marie Combette and Daniel Moreno Flores, has reimagined the structure by raising a lightweight eucalyptus roof, creating a striking contrast between old and new.

Suspended Bedrooms Above

The most striking feature of the redesign is the introduction of two elevated 'nests' that serve as bedrooms, suspended beneath the new roof. This clever use of space not only maximizes the building's footprint but also lends a whimsical quality to the home. The upper level, constructed from locally sourced eucalyptus poles and split cane, offers a handmade aesthetic that complements the original masonry walls.

Emphasizing Sustainability and Reuse

The architects have taken sustainability to heart, incorporating salvaged materials from the old structure into the new design. Wooden components from the dismantled roof have been repurposed as flooring, while coconut fiber and egg cartons provide insulation. This thoughtful approach not only addresses the building's previous issues with moisture but also enhances its character, allowing for a seamless blend of the historical and the contemporary.

Connecting with the Landscape

One of the project’s key achievements is the improvement of natural light and airflow within the space. New glass facades create visual connections to the surrounding fields, and clerestory windows allow sunlight to filter through, brightening the interior. The transformation highlights the stunning views of the Cholán tree and the mountains, effectively merging the indoor and outdoor environments.
