April Graves, with a rich background in fashion, has forged a unique path in the realm of natural stone design. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in Textiles and Interiors from Seattle Pacific University and a master’s degree from Central Saint Martins, she honed her skills at prestigious brands like Burberry and Duchamp London. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she encountered Aria Stone Gallery, where she now serves as partner and COO.
Graves’ first visit to the Dallas gallery left a lasting impression as she was captivated by the grand stone slabs that seemed to pulse with potential. ‘Natural stone can be appreciated as an art form rather than simply a building material,’ she reflects, highlighting her evolving perspective on this often-overlooked medium.
Since joining Aria in 2014, Graves has played a pivotal role in sculpting the gallery’s identity. In 2020, she became a partner and introduced a sourcing philosophy known as ‘buying wild,’ aiming to celebrate the unique characteristics of each stone. ‘I approach natural stone as a design element with its own character and story,’ she explains, drawing parallels to her fashion background.
During her explorations of quarries, Graves seeks that striking slab that captures her imagination. ‘No two pieces of natural stone are ever exactly alike,’ she notes, emphasizing the thrill of the hunt for materials that inspire creativity in designers. Her philosophy encourages designers to explore the unexpected, advocating for direct interaction with stone to fully appreciate its movement and visual balance.
One trend Graves finds particularly exciting is the innovative use of offcuts and remnants. Traditionally reserved for larger installations, these materials are now finding their way into bespoke details, allowing for creative continuity within spaces. ‘It’s a beautiful way to celebrate every part of the slab,’ she adds.
Among the latest offerings at Aria is Rosso Melograno, a rich burgundy marble from Italy that embodies the gallery’s quest for distinctive materials. Graves describes it as a warm neutral that can serve as a versatile anchor in contemporary interiors. ‘Its depth and personality cater to the growing appreciation for warmer palettes in design,’ she asserts.
Looking ahead, Graves envisions a shift in luxury natural stone—a movement towards authenticity over excess. Designers and clients are increasingly valuing craftsmanship and character, paving the way for natural stone to become a central narrative element in design. ‘Every slab tells a story and can transform a space into something truly personal,’ she concludes.
