April Graves, a seasoned fashion expert turned natural stone advocate, is revolutionizing the way we think about stone in design. With an educational background in Textiles and Interiors from Seattle Pacific University and a master's from Central Saint Martins, her experience spans prestigious brands like Burberry and Duchamp London. Graves is now the partner and COO at Aria Stone Gallery, a position that allows her to blend her fashion insights with the unique aesthetic of natural stone.

Her journey began with a visit to the Dallas gallery, where monumental stone slabs captured her imagination. "I discovered that natural stone could be appreciated as an art form rather than simply a building material,” she reflects, a sentiment that has since shaped her philosophy at Aria Stone. Joining the gallery in 2014, Graves has played a key role in establishing its identity and sourcing philosophy known as 'buying wild'.

Graves' fashion background informs her meticulous approach to stone selection. She emphasizes the importance of color, texture, and craftsmanship, viewing natural stone not just as a surface but as a vital design element. “I approach natural stone in much the same way—not simply as a surface, but as a design element with its own character, movement, and story,” she explains.

When sourcing materials, Graves is drawn to slabs that evoke an immediate emotional reaction. Each piece of natural stone is unique, making the search akin to finding a hidden gem. “I trust my first impression and look for materials with exceptional movement, character, and originality,” she notes, highlighting her belief that every stone can inspire creativity in designers.

At Aria, Graves encourages designers to experience the stones in person, as she believes this firsthand interaction reveals possibilities that aren't evident in small samples. This philosophy is evident in their selection of stones, which often challenge conventional expectations and inspire innovative design solutions.

One of the materials Graves is particularly excited about is Rosso Melograno, a rare burgundy marble from northwestern Italy. “Rosso Melograno represents exactly the kind of material we’re always searching for—something distinctive that feels both unexpected and enduring,” she says. This marble not only reflects a growing appreciation for warmer palettes but also embodies a shift towards integrating offcuts and remnants into smaller design details, creating a narrative of continuity.

Graves envisions Rosso Melograno as a versatile warm neutral, ideal for contemporary interiors where it can add depth and richness without overwhelming the space. As she looks to the future, her perspective on luxury natural stone is evolving. “Luxury is becoming less about excess and more about authenticity,” she asserts, emphasizing the value of craftsmanship and genuine character in design.
