Arsenal Eyes Ezri Konsa as Defensive Reinforcement Amid Injury Woes

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 2 min read

As Arsenal gears up to defend their Premier League crown, the club has set its sights on bolstering its defense by pursuing a move for Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, reportedly for around £51 million. This decision comes despite the Gunners already having seven senior defenders on their roster.

Mikel Arteta's squad has seen significant investment this transfer window, with over £100 million spent on new talent, including Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million and Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million. However, the urgency for Konsa stems from injury concerns that could impact their defensive lineup.

Last season, Arsenal's well-structured defense was pivotal in securing their first title in 22 years, conceding only 27 league goals. Yet, they now face a challenging start to the season without key players: William Saliba is sidelined with a long-term back injury, while Jurrien Timber is recovering from a groin issue.

This leaves Ben White as the only fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the sole right-sided center-back to partner with Gabriel Magalhaes. With recent injuries and the unpredictability of squad depth, Arteta appears to be taking a proactive approach by targeting Konsa, who is in the prime of his career at 28.

Despite having made Piero Hincapie's loan deal permanent and the emergence of academy star Marli Salmon, Arteta seems hesitant to rely on two left-footed players in central defense. Konsa, who had an impressive season with Villa and excelled at the World Cup for England, could add both reliability and depth to the backline.

Konsa's statistics from the previous Premier League season further justify Arsenal's interest; he led the league in ground duel success at 73.1% and showcased an outstanding passing accuracy of 95%. His adeptness in ball carries and high pass completion rate during the World Cup only solidifies his reputation as a top defender.

While some fans are questioning how often Konsa will feature once Saliba and Gabriel return, the reality is that Arsenal's demanding schedule—63 matches last season—necessitates a deeper squad. Arteta has emphasized the need for a balanced approach in squad composition, acknowledging the importance of injury history and player versatility.

Arsenal's ambitions extend beyond immediate signings; chief executive Richard Garlick confirmed the club's goal to join the ranks of global football powerhouses. As they explore revenue growth and stadium expansion, the acquisition of Konsa represents a strategic move to enhance their competitive edge.
